Isn't it an absolute shame? I felt terrible then and now, of course, in these early days of winter, I'm absolutely kicking myself. What I wouldn't give for a fresh-off-the-vine cucumber. (Next year tell the family member whose eyes are bigger than her stomach that she has to at least take them so you can believe they've been eaten with grateful abandon.)

I sympathize with your cucumber story. I grow lemon cucumbers in particular, because a family member avidly requests them every year. But once they start ripening at a steady rate, she loses interest and they just pile up in the crisper. I'm not sure if she doesn't like cucumbers as much as she thinks, or she just doesn't like the ones I grow and she's too polite to say so! :D

Yes, a bit sad when you're down to the last few plants-- I have one collard plant and few tiny boy choi persisting through the cold (and one surprise snow storm). Time to start planning for next year!

We had tons of white flies over in Washington state, too! Very few aphids this year, but tons of whiteflies. Our neighbors across the street had to put those yellow sticky traps on their indoor and outdoor plants. They even got all over my tomatoes; I've never seen that happen before.

Amen to that! Caging mature tomatoes is like untangling a boxful of necklaces. Although it's great that your patio tomato plants got bigger than they were supposed to.

You said it. We waited to long to stake/cage our tomato plants, and now they reside mostly in our neighbor's back yard; untethered and unrestrained, they jumped the wall separating our patios.

Instead of facing that 90 F weather over a boiling canner, I've switched to making fermented pickles! Very easy, but I'm eating them too fast to determine what their end date is. Easy Fermented Pickles

I'm sure I'll do some hot water bath pickles for keeping a bit later in the summer, though.
